For mortgages and savings, building societies are often preferred:

Documents Required

Valid passport (Jamaican or foreign)
TRN (Tax Registration Number) — apply at Tax Administration Jamaica if you don't have one
Proof of address in Jamaica (utility bill, rental agreement, or letter from landlord)
Two references (can be personal or professional — some banks accept overseas references)
Source of funds documentation (employment letter, pension statement, or bank statements)
Proof of returning resident status (if applicable — for duty concession applications)

Getting a TRN

A TRN (Tax Registration Number) is required for virtually all financial transactions in Jamaica — banking, property purchase, employment, and government services.

Where to apply: Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) offices island-wide. The main office is at 65 Constant Spring Road, Kingston.

Documents needed: Valid passport, birth certificate (for Jamaican nationals), and proof of address.

Processing time: Usually issued same day if applying in person with complete documents.

From abroad: Some Jamaican consulates and high commissions can process TRN applications. JN also assists diaspora clients.

Account Types

JMD Savings/Chequing: Essential for daily transactions — utilities, groceries, local payments. Most banks offer debit cards accepted island-wide.

USD Savings: Useful for receiving overseas pension payments and maintaining purchasing power. Most major banks offer USD accounts.

Fixed Deposits: Higher interest rates than savings accounts. Terms range from 30 days to 1 year+. JMD fixed deposits offer 5–8% depending on the institution and term.

Tips for Returning Residents

Start the process before you arrive — JN and VMBS have diaspora desks that can pre-arrange accounts
Keep your overseas bank account open for receiving pension and other payments
Use Wise, Remitly or WorldRemit for competitive exchange rates on international transfers
Set up online banking immediately — most Jamaican banks have mobile apps
Ask about diaspora-specific products — some banks offer preferential rates for returning residents
Open both JMD and USD accounts if you'll be receiving foreign currency income

Be Patient

Jamaica's banking KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements are strict. The process may take longer than you're used to abroad. Bring all documents to your first visit to avoid return trips.
