Fairy Hill, located in Portland Parish on Jamaica’s northeast coast, has a rich history that reflects the broader narrative of the region. Originally known as Lodges Hope, the estate was owned by Charles Fuhr between 1791 and 1792. In her 1834 will, Catherine Trower Fuhr, Charles’s widow, bequeathed the Fairy Hill estate to her daughter, Catherine Trower Humphrys, under a deed dating back to 1784.
The name “Fairy Hill” is among several in Portland Parish that originated from old sugar estates, reflecting the area’s agricultural past. Other such names include Snow Hill, Norwich, Prospect, Boston, and Egg Hill.
In more recent history, the Fairy Hill community successfully campaigned to keep Winnifred Beach, a local attraction, accessible to the public. After a seven-year legal battle, residents and visitors retained the right to enjoy the beach without restriction.
Additionally, in 2008, a community center was established on the grounds of Poinciana Park in Fairy Hill under the Lift Up Jamaica Programme, providing a space for local events and activities.
Today, Fairy Hill is known for its captivating natural environment, offering proximity to attractions like Winnifred Beach, Boston Bay, San San Beach, and the Blue Lagoon, making it a notable destination in Portland Parish.
