Parish: St. Catherine
Established in 1835, Jericho Baptist Church stands as a significant landmark in Jamaica’s post-emancipation history. Built from cut stone and brick, its design features a zinc hip roof for durability and a red brick staircase on the south elevation, leading to a wooden balcony inside the sanctuary. These architectural elements highlight its historical character.
Founded by Baptist missionary John Clarke, the church quickly became a hub for large congregations eager to hear the Gospel, often exceeding its capacity. Beyond spiritual guidance, it played a vital role in supporting the black community during the post-emancipation era, contributing to their welfare and fostering hope. Today, Jericho Baptist Church remains a symbol of faith, resilience, and community strength.
