Saint Ann is recognized as the largest parish in Jamaica, covering approximately 1,212 square kilometers (468.9 square miles). Located along the island’s north coast in the county of Middlesex, Saint Ann is strategically positioned between Jamaica’s eastern and western ends, making it a central hub for tourism and commerce. Known as the Garden Parish due to its lush vegetation, abundant flora, and natural beauty, it is home to numerous historical, cultural, and ecological landmarks.

Saint Ann holds a significant place in Jamaica’s history, being the birthplace of Marcus Garvey, one of the nation’s most revered national heroes and a prominent figure in the Pan-African movement. It is also believed to be the site where Christopher Columbus first landed in Jamaica in 1494, specifically in the area now known as Discovery Bay.

The parish is famous for its tourist attractions, including Dunn’s River Falls, a world-renowned cascading waterfallNine Mile, the birthplace and mausoleum of reggae legend Bob Marley; and the Green Grotto Caves, which hold rich historical significance as hideouts for enslaved Africans and later for smugglers. Saint Ann also features Runaway Bayand Ocho Rios, two prominent resort towns that draw thousands of visitors annually.

Agriculture plays a key role in the parish’s economy, with major exports including bananas, yam, citrus, and other tropical produce. Additionally, Saint Ann is rich in bauxite reserves, making mining another critical contributor to its economic activities.

In terms of natural beauty, the parish boasts Fern Gully, a scenic drive lined with a dense canopy of ferns, and the Priory Beach, known for its serene atmosphere. The parish also contains part of the Cockpit Country, a unique geological area characterized by limestone hills and sinkholes.

Saint Ann’s diverse heritage, lush landscapes, and vibrant economy make it not only Jamaica’s largest parish geographically but also one of its most influential in terms of culture, tourism, and history.
