A dual system of recording ownership in Jamaica means there are two ways to keep track of who owns land or property. One way is the older system, called the common law system, where ownership is proven by looking at a series of papers (called deeds) that show all the past owners. You would have to check through these papers to make sure the current owner is legitimate. The other way is the newer Torrens system, which is simpler because it records ownership in a central register. Once a property is listed here, it’s guaranteed that the person named as the owner really owns it, and there’s no need to check old records. Both systems are used in Jamaica today, so when someone buys or sells property, or when a bank gives a loan, they have to look at which system the property is recorded under. This can sometimes make things a bit complicated, but it’s important for making sure the right person owns the land and that there are no legal problems later.
