The Morant Point Lighthouse, located at the easternmost point of Jamaica in St. Thomas, is the oldest lighthouse on the island, built in 1841. It is recognized as a National Monument by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. Standing 100 feet tall, the lighthouse is made of cast iron, with a base diameter of 5 feet, tapering to 3 feet at the top. It was cast in London and constructed by kru-men, African workers brought to Jamaica for infrastructure projects.
Situated at a key point for maritime navigation, the lighthouse has been essential in guiding ships safely through the challenging waters of the eastern coastline, protecting vessels from reefs and shallow areas. Beyond its functional role, Morant Point Lighthouse stands as a reminder of Jamaica’s history and the significant contribution of African labor to the island’s development. Today, it continues to serve both as a navigational aid and as a historic landmark.
